Little deuce coup
The title is something that just popped into my head and I fancied, though I do mean “coup”. Unfortunately, though, that’s where the fantastical ends. Back here in the real world Trump is either seriously attempting a coup, being a good McConnell soldier and working to get the base fired up for the Georgia special Senate race, or just throwing a tantrum and attempting to break every dish in the cupboard. My bet is all three.
What Trump is doing to American Democracy will have very real, nasty lasting effects for decades, if not generations, to come. The fact that not only is the GOP en masse complicit in Trump’s many, many egregious violent acts against the very foundations of American politics and society, but that they are explicitly pushing and supporting Trump’s anti-democratic maneuvering, should be enough for not only the media in this country, but the citizens and population at large to recognize what they truly are. A political movement intent on destroying American Democracy for the sole purpose of retaining Power and reshaping the Nation into their vision and image. A Theocracy wherein Religious Freedom overrides any and all other liberties, freedoms and rights. A Theocracy in which McConnell and gang believe they can use Trump to their own ends, control him, and eventually get rid of him (if it so pleases the Party). A country in which Monied Straight (and Straight Acting) White Male Christians run the show, and everyone else exists at their pleasure.
Don’t think it can happen here? Look around. It’s happening now and the Republicans have been working toward this since the Religious Right subsumed the Party under Reagan. I get that religious freedom and secular society can be tricky weights on the scales of justice. After all, bigotry and hatred aren’t societal evils left only for those of different skin colors and ethnic heritages. However, what the Republicans have been able to do with the help, prodding and support of Evangelical Christians is to turn the delicate balancing act of religious freedom and secular society on its head. Instead, what we have today is an America in which Christian bigotry takes precedence over Individual Rights. What the Republican Party wants and has become adept at building is an America in which “personal responsibility” is the marketing term but what they’re really selling is a Fascist Theocratic State where you’re Free and enjoy Liberty as long as you fit their ideals of who is a Full Citizen and toe the Party and Religious line.
Everything you see right now, every move Trump makes, the deafening silence of Republican Leadership regarding Biden’s win, McConnell’s recent Senate floor speech that purposefully omitted mention of Biden’s win and urged, egged on and supported Trump’s false claims of voter fraud and a stolen election, are all in support of Trump’s coup attempt merely because it fits with McConnells end goals. Make no mistake, Trump is attempting a coup, and with the help of the Republicans and the Party members he has a very real possibility of pulling it off.
I never thought I would live to see the day, but here it is. We, the real Patriots, those who love our Country and have fought and worked so hard to make real the promises of the American Ideal must continue to fight to ensure our Nation remains democratic, a shining beacon on the hill of Freedom, Liberty and Equality for all with government, big and small, local and national, that is empowered by Us, the People, and derives its legitimacy because We the People give it.
